The 'Colour of Mother’s Day’ is an inviting floral pink whose kind-hearted nature suggests a loving touch.

Honouring the women whose unending love and devotion we cherish, City Centre shopping Malls in the Middle East have collaborated with the Pantone Color Institute to introduce “The Colour of Mother’s Day”, an inviting floral pink shade that suggests a loving touch. Like colour, there are many shades to motherhood, and capturing feelings of sweetness and tender affection, the Colour of Mother’s Day is infused with nurturing warmth and compassion.

Colour is a powerful tool that can communicate feelings, moods and physiological reactions. Experts at the Pantone Color Institute™ defined the stories shared by City Centre customers into five colours spanning green, yellow, red, pink and blue color families. Green represents the protective nature of mothers, while yellow alludes to their optimistic outlook towards life and for their children. Pink captures their compassionate and nurturing side and red focuses on their passion and empowerment drive. At the same time, they are always calm and patient, which is represented by the colour blue.

With the help of customers’ stories about their mothers and emotional cues, a public vote was cast amongst City Centre shoppers, and one colour emerged as the one that strongly represents mothers, making it a signature hue that will instantly evoke all those feelings, and symbolize motherhood.

Our Beauty Insider Just Revealed How to Fake a Believable Tan

Get the lowdown on how to look like a golden goddess this summer.

The top self-tan tips to getting a golden glow like Margot Robbie

How to fake tan and the best self-tanners to buy now

Our resident tan enthusiast Gemma Colhaught gives her insider’s guide on how to master fake bake like a pro.

I have my mother’s British side of the family to thank for my freckly, pasty and prone to burning skin tone. Okay, let’s call it ‘English rose’ to be more polite.
I’ve been hitting the tanning bottle for well over 15 years now and to be completely honest with you; there have been a fair few mishaps along the way – think tangerine-tinged eyebrows and knees that looked as though I’d knelt in the mud. Neither the desired effect I was hoping for at the time, but beauty blunders that taught me the hard way of how to expertly fake a sun-kissed tan.
I’m all for embracing your natural skin colour. I encourage it –think of the time you’ll save. However, if like me you think you look slightly healthier and plan on hitting the pool this weekend, follow my lead to achieving a flawless, and most importantly, safe tan from the comfort of your bathroom.

The Prep

Body scrub gloves by The Body Shop, at Mall of Egypt and City Centres

Think of exfoliating before fake tanning like sanding a wall before painting – it’s vital for getting that super smooth finish.
Take a long hot bath or shower to soften your pores before scrubbing down. Most grainy exfoliating scrubs tend to have oils in the formula, so steer well clear as any residue left on your skin will affect the tan’s adherence.
Instead, I can vouch for suitable scrubbing gloves with a dollop of creamy body wash. It will get the job done quicker, and you’ll be left with squeaky-clean skin. Finish with a slightly brutal hit of cold water in the shower to help close your pores.

The Smoother

Origins Oil-Free Lotion from Sephora, at City Centres

Next, you’ll want to apply just a tiny amount of non-oil-based body lotion to any dry areas, which for me tends to be my knees, elbows, underarms and ankles. I also advise adding a slick of cream to the soles of your feet to avoid looking like you’ve stepped in turmeric.

The Tan

St Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse from Boots, at City Centres

St Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, Boots Pharmacy, visit City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, City Centre Sharjah, City Centre Fujairah, City Centre Me'aisem, City Centre Bahrain and City Centre Muscat

To avoid the dreaded tell-tale streaks that can occur with fake tan, I recommend using a tanning mitt and sweeping over your limbs in circular motions till blended – do so with a light touch, you can always add later.
Be especially careful with your feet. Do these and your hands last and gently rub over whatever product is leftover on the mitt.
If you want a hint of colour on your face, opt for a product especially formulated for this area. I love the Clarins Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster –add a few drops to your normal serum or moisture, and remember to blend down your neck.
Fake tans now come in all formulas, but my favourite is a mousse as it tends to dry the quickest. For a more subtle and buildable bronze, try a gradual tan that you can apply every day as you would a regular body moisturiser.

Quick Tricks Of The Trade

If you have fair or blonde brows, make sure that you run over with dampened cotton buds to remove excess product and avoid staining.

Always blend lightly in-between your toes and fingers as any white patches will be a giveaway.

Whatever your favoured de-fuzzing method, do all hair removal the day before at-home tanning for the best results.

Sweating or applying deodorant can cause your tan to go streaky or patchy – remember to turn on your AC and wear dark PJs, so you don’t ruin your white bed sheets.

Fitness 101: Your Top 3 Fitness Questions Answered

How to fit exercise into a busy schedule, build upper body strength and tone your tummy in a flash?

Fitness tricks and gym style

Tips and tricks to getting the most out of your workout

You asked, and we answered. Here are easy-to-follow solutions to your most troublesome fitness queries.

I work 12-hour days, sitting at a desk for most of that time. I’m too tired to go to the gym by the time I get home. How can I fit an effective workout into my day?

Carving out time to exercise throughout a hectic working day is no easy feat, but if you’re serious about investing in your health and embarking on a regular get-fit regime, find a time that suits your schedule and one that you can stick to, no excuses.

We find early mornings are often best. Aside from getting your workout out of the way first thing, it will boost your mood and energy levels for the day ahead. Reward yourself post-workout with a fresh smoothie or your favourite coffee – it’ll make getting out of bed easier if you know a treat is waiting.

If you find yourself hitting the snooze button, try breaking up the workout into slots – a quick 20-minute jog in the morning or a power walk on your lunch break, followed by a yoga or pilates class in the evening to help you wind down from the day.

I see different people doing variations of sit-ups and crunches in my gym. What works best for a flat stomach?

While most gyms usually offer some specialised machines for the abdominal area, the most effective tummy toning methods can be carried out with just a simple mat to help protect and cushion your back.

To firm up your abs and reduce belly fat (plus those pesky side parts), create your circuit that includes a range of sit-ups, crunches and planks, and 15 minutes of HIIT or high-intensity interval training. If you’re having trouble mastering the moves, take a look on YouTube for expert video tutorials on how to get the most out of the various positions – and remember to always fully engage your core for max impact.

Stomach exercises can be notoriously sore, especially in the beginning, so create a mini playlist of empowering songs to get you through the circuit.

Key buy: Exercise Mat

I’m a runner and have completed a couple of marathons. But my upper strength is lacking. Any suggestions to help me build my upper strength without taking me away from the treadmill for too long?

The upper body is often overlooked for runners, but this area is crucial for improving your speed and endurance. Look to abdominal and back building exercises, such as push-ups or bench presses.

If you’re hesitant to step off the treadmill, set the incline upwards and do a series of short vertical sprints to add intensity and target your upper body while still working your legs. To further tone your arms and shoulders, you can also carry out a few rounds of bicep curls and overhead presses with dumbbells while speed walking.

Dannielle’s Quick Tips To A Leading A Healthier Lifestyle

1. I truly believe we are what we eat. Nourish your body and it will be happy. I follow an 80% vegetarian diet and avoid processed food.

2. Practice self-care. If you work long hours or have a stressful job, make sure you get enough sleep and look after your body and mind.

3. Manage your digital consumption. Check your emails or social media at set times of the day and then put it away so that you are not always looking at a screen.

4. If, like me, you live in a sunny country, mole mapping is so important as it will help detect any signs of melanoma.

5. Drinking water is key. I have made it a habit to drink a minimum of three litres a day. Every time I leave in my car I take two bottles with me and then drink more when I get home. I don’t buy plastic bottles and instead refill glass bottles from my kitchen.

6. My friends laugh at me for taking up to 10 vitamins a day, but I truly believe in their properties and never forget to take them. I only buy high strength and good quality, such as Solgar.

Everyday Beauty Blunders Solved

Don’t fall foul to these common skincare mistakes

Beauty mistakes to avoid

Beauty mistakes to avoid

From neglecting your neck to applying SPF incorrectly and using out-of-date products, these are the biggest skincare mistakes to avoid.

Never Neglect Your Neck
Skipping the neck and décolleté area is a skin sin that many of us make. Yet simply put, the skin on your neck is no different to that on your face. There is no need to invest in a specialised cream, just use your daily products (cleaner, toner, serums, moisturiser and SPF) on this area every single day.

Beauty tip: When applying products to your neck, make sure you do so with upward motions towards your face to help lift before gently pressing into skin, and never drag down as this can cause sagging.

The Correct Way To Layer SPF
Whatever your morning skincare routine, be it a leisurely and meticulous ritual or more of a slap-dash approach, the order in which you apply each step makes a huge difference to how your products perform.
Post cleanse and tone, pat on your everyday serum and then apply sun protection before your moisturiser – heavy creams can create a barrier that interferes with an SPF’s penetration and reduces the effectiveness of the protection. We recommend looking for a multi-tasking moisturiser already formulated with an SPF.

Beauty tip: Brimming with powerful antioxidants, Vitamin C serums offer a whole host of skin benefits (think brightening and anti-inflammatory), but the real skincare science gets to work when this active ingredient is paired with SPF. Vitamin C further enhances the function of sun protectors by slowing the rate of free radical damage to collagen, all while helping the skin to repair. We’ll take it by the litre please!

Don’t Ignore Expiry Dates
Take a good look at your skincare stash and carefully examine each product’s packaging – you should find a tiny symbol of an open jar and a number (usually placed on the bottom of pots or the back of bottles and tubes). This represents the amount of time in months that a product will be safe to use once opened. For example: 6M, 12M, 18M or 24M.
Be especially diligent when it comes to acne, anti-aging, antioxidants or SPF, as all can lose their efficiency once expired – you may even notice a slight change in colour.

Beauty tip: Never forget to look at the expiry dates on your make-up too, as it can reduce in quality and result in irritation due to a build-up of bacteria over time – particularly in mascaras, which beauty experts advise replacing every three to six months.

It’s vitally important to keep your ticker in tip-top condition. Did you know that cardiovascular disease is accountable for nearly half of all non-communicable disease deaths, making it the world’s number one killer? It’s a sobering thought, right?

Heart disease causes one in three female deaths each year, according to the World Heart Federation. While we know, we should, and strive to live healthier lives, 52% of women in the GCC are still concerned about being overweight and 33% percent worry about high-cholesterol – both risk factors for heart disease.

Let’s change that!

Where to Go For Hair Removal in Dubai

The newest treatments offer better results with less pain.

Hair removal in the Dubai shopping malls

The best places for hair removal in Dubai

We doubt we’re alone when it comes to dreading a waxing appointment. In whatever form you usually opt for, be is threading, epilating, waxing or sugaring, it can be fist-clenching sore yet a natural necessity for many of us when it comes to personal grooming.

If permanent lasering isn’t an option or your hair is too fair (it tends to work best on darker pigments), read on as we uncover the new waxing treatments promising less pain and better results – now available at two of the leading salons in Dubai.

The Nail Spa

iPads loaded with all the latest fashion and gossip magazines, chic design-driven interiors, warm lavender scented neck pillows and a refreshments menu – no wonder The Nail Spa (TNS) is one of the UAE’s most-loved salons.

Aside from creating some of the most innovative nail art in the city, this chain of beauty salons also offer excellent hair removal treatments, all carried out by an army of highly trained therapists.

The real winning point is that TNS uses a version of stripless wax that promises “less ouch” moments. The jasmine-scented hot wax is simply applied directly to the skin, allowed to cool and harden (takes just seconds) and whipped off in a flash to reveal super smooth and fuzz-free skin.

The details: The Nail Spa is located in Mall of the Emirates and City Centre Deira

Sisters Beauty Lounge

Aside from housing some of the most luxurious private treatment rooms we’ve experienced in a salon, the therapists here are experts in their field and offer waxing and threading for almost every face and body part imaginable, including a full body wax that takes up to 90 minutes.

Similar to The Nail Spa, Sisters uses Lycon wax, known to be slightly less painful and much more precise when it comes to leaving a smooth finish. Each treatment begins with a refreshing cleanser to rid the skin of oils, followed by the waxing and finished with a nourishing cream to calm any redness.

You need to try these standout skin boosters.

The best beauty facemasks to try tonight

The best facemasks to try tonight

Battling with our teenage complexions years ago, we remember the days of slathering our faces with a thick green mud that promised to leave skin glowing after just one use. The outcome was often the opposite – an angry red rash and sore, raw pores. And don’t get us started on those skin-tearing blackhead strips that stuck to our noses like superglue!

Thankfully, the skincare world has evolved since then, and while you can still find similar products on the market, we advise steering well clear. Instead, take a look below where we list the most innovative and industry-loved facemasks that deliver real results without harming your pores.

Avène Cleanance Mask at Boots Pharmacy, available at Mall of the Emirates and City Centres

If months of humid summer temperatures have given you spotty skin reach for Avène’s Cleanance Mask ASAP. This weekly treatment helps to regulate sebum production (the oil glands that can lead to clogged pores) and smooth skin through a proven formula of gentle and effective exfoliating acids, including glycolic, lactic and salicylic, while the bonus of soft Kaolin clay works to absorb excess oil.

Suitable for even sensitive skin types, the mask can be applied to the dry or damp skin and rubbed gently all over your face before rinsing after five minutes.

A sheet mask like no other, this smart skin treat comes in two parts: an ultra-hydrating serum (inside a little ampoule) and a blue rubber mask to then place over your face, which further helps the active ingredients to penetrate your skin deeply – just make sure to warn any guests before opening the door.

Dr.Jart+ offers a variety of masks for different skin woes, but this moisturising formula is saving our post-summer parched pores thanks to the blend of botanical proteins, Vitamin C and rich minerals.

Infused with a long list of antioxidants, including cranberry, lemon balm and ginseng, this overnight mask sinks into the skin while you sleep – without leaving an oily film on your pillowcase. The lightweight formula brightens and nourishes a tired complexion so you can wake up to fresh skin.

You Need To Know These Skin-Saving Beauty Tips

Banish breakouts and get your glow on.

The expert guide to keeping your skin clear

The expert guide to keeping your skin clear

Anyone who has suffered from acne will know that it can dent your self-esteem. The dread and disappointment of waking up in the morning to see yet another angry, swollen mound is enough to make anyone want to sack off the day and hide under the covers.

If you’re struggling with a skin woe (be it a one-off pimple or a more severe case of acne), don’t despair! Instead, concentrate on soothing your skin and improving the situation as best possible.

While we’ve yet to come across just one magic cure-it-all product, we have found some brilliant beauty buys that will undoubtedly aid in healing current spots and helping to reduce future breakouts.

Avène Cleanance Cleansing Gel at Boots Pharmacy in Mall of the Emirates and City Centres

Avène Cleanance Cleansing Gel, Boots Pharmacy, visit Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, City Centre Sharjah, City Centre Fujairah, City Centre Me'aisem, City Centre Bahrain and City Centre Muscat

Cleansing is the first and one of the most critical steps in a skincare routine, especially for oily complexions. Make sure you wash your face thoroughly at least twice a day with a formula especially suited to your skin type. However, steer clear of harsh ingredients (such as alcohol) that will only dry out your complexion, making the pores produce more oil to compensate for lack of moisture.

Beauty tip: Avoid confusing and stressing out your skin by using many masks and scrubs to fix the problem. Take a more streamlined route with simple yet effective products to balance out your skin’s PH level.

Rodial Vit C Pads at Harvey Nichols Dubai available in Mall of the Emirates

Rodial Vit C Brightening Cleansing Pads, Harvey Nichols Dubai, visit Mall of the Emirates

Acid exfoliating might sound scary, but it’s much gentler on skin than a grainy scrub, which can spread bacteria and even cause micro-tearing on the epidermis (the upper layers of your skin).

If you don’t know your BHAs from your AHAs, look out for essential acids such as glycolic, salicylic and lactic, along with fruit acids, to help brighten and wipe away pore-clogging debris from your complexion.

Beauty tip: To get the full effects from your routine, we recommend using a light hand to layer products – think a light serum, followed by your spot treatment of choice and finally, a soothing oil to help repair skin overnight.

The oil will usually do one of two things; either it will help disperse the spot, or it will work at bringing any cysts or pimples to a head, making it easier to squeeze – yes, we all do it (use clean hands and have a mild anti-bacterial solution at the ready).

This nourishing balm was created for post-chemical skin peels to help accelerate repair of the epidermis. We’ve found it also works well to soothe some irritations, especially if you’ve overdone strong acne products or chapped the skin due to excessive squeezing.

Beauty tip: All skin types (even oily or acne-prone) need moisture. It might be tempting to use strong products to dry out the spot, but you could end up damaging the surrounding skin making it harder to heal, which could potentially leave a scar.

A final word on acne:
We all have something we’d like to change about ourselves and while breakouts might seem like the be all and end all right now, your skin will eventually clear. Take a look at your diet, lifestyle choices and skincare products and make the changes accordingly. If the problem persists, book in with a dermatologist to seek professional advice.

Crystal decanter by Crate & Barrel Dubai, available at Mall of the Emirates

Take a leaf out of the design experts’ book and create a bar top in your living room – you don’t even need a dedicated bar cart as any high table surface will do. On a tray, display a cocktail mixer, a selection of glasses (tall tumblers at the back and small sizes up front) and add decorative items such as a small bowl of fresh limes, a silver ice bucket and a mix of crystal decanters.

Doorknobs by Zara Home Dubai, available at Mall of the Emirates, Mall of Egypt, and Majid Al Futtaim City Centres

You don’t have to be a tech genius to know that lighting has the power to alter a room’s ambience completely, so always opt for dimmers so you can control the setting throughout the day – anything too harsh can often make a place feel like a doctor’s surgery. We love these Moroccan-inspired ceiling lamps that reflect pretty patterns onto plain walls – beautiful light and art in one!

Expert Easy Make-Up Hacks To Take Your Look From Day To Night

Selfie-worthy beauty tricks to amp up your face in a flash.

The best time-saving beauty tricks to know now

The best time-saving beauty tricks to know now

Whether you are finishing off an essential brief at the office or trying to put the little ones to bed, attempting to get out the door on time for evening social plans never entirely goes to plan.

If you only have ten minutes to spare to take your face from day to dancefloor-ready, you will want to read our quick tricks to looking fresher than you feel in record time.

Wipe the Day Away

No matter how pressed for time, we always start with a clean canvas. There is nothing worse than piling fresh make-up onto oily, old slap – the result often ends looking streaky and patchy. Stash a pack of make-up wipes nearby to quickly clean before spritzing with a splash of rose water or toning spray.

Cover Up

No time for moisturiser, primer and foundation? No problem – just opt for a do-it-all BB cream such as Dior’s Hydra Life BB Crème. This multi-tasking wonder product nourishes and adds a healthy-looking veil of natural coverage.

The Eyes Have It

Blend a dab of light-reflecting concealer (we love the Candleglow Concealer by Laura Mercier) under your peepers set with a quick dusting of translucent powder. If you have time, add a slick of white or beige kohl along your waterline to instantly open and refresh tired eyes.

Bronze Age

Dust bronzer onto the sides of your forehead, cheekbones and jawline to easily sculpt. Forgo eyeshadow and use the same bronzing shade to add subtle definition in the crease of your lids. Top off with a few coats of jet-black mascara.

Pucker Up

A punchy shot of colour on your lips is a sure-fire way to vamp up your look and mask a tired complexion instantly. Opt for a vibrant shade to suit your skin tone. This season we are reaching for berry reds and deep merlots for a quick hit of colour.

First port of call? Your coffee table. The easiest and perhaps most noticeable way to transform your living room is by updating your central table.

Bear in mind that this furniture piece usually sits in-between a sofa and television, so chances are you will use it a lot.

Less is often more, so rid the table of clutter and old magazines, replacing with a curated selection of books (pick tomes which best represent your tastes, be it fashion, cars or food for example) and use sleek trays to store and display stylish nik naks such as large scented candles, bowls and ornaments.

For extra impact, colour-coordinate your items. Start with a monochrome palette and add two colour tones such as grey and blue. This chic piece by Zara Home will instantly streamline the look, making everything appear neater and more cohesive.

The Velvet Pillow

Through different textures, prints and colours, pillows are a quick way to jazz up any room with minimal effort. This season, the trend-conscious can look to a variety of different themes to work with sofas, chairs and beds depending on your overall style.

Our standout interior trend of the season for the coming months is cosy velvet accents. Look out for plush cushions in deep, rich shades of emerald green, ruby red and dark ink blue paired with neutral classics such as white, cream or beige.

Beauty Tips Straight From The Supermodels

You need to try these tricks-of-the-trades as revealed by the world’s most-followed women.

Supermodel beauty secrets

From supermodel Bella Hadid’s secret lip smoothing trick to Cindy Crawford’s body buffing technique, we’re sharing the ultimate celebrity beauty tips.

In an interview with beauty website intothegloss.com, legendary supermodel Cindy Crawford revealed the secret to her smooth skin:I am a big fan of dry brushing,” she said. “It is great if it’s the winter and you are drier. They say it’s really good for circulation and lymphatic drainage, too. The bristles on a dry body brush are pretty firm so it takes some time to get used to, but I just love the way it feels.”

We find dry body brushing works best after a sauna or hot bath when the skin has softened, making it easier to brush away dead skin. Rinse off in a cool shower post-scrub and finish with a thick layer of body cream.

When strapped for time, the model of the moment Bella Hadid relies on Dior’s best-selling Dior Addict Lip Sugar Scrub to smooth her pout. “Mornings are usually really hectic for me but I’ve got my beauty routine down to a science,” says Bella. “The [Dior] Lip Sugar Scrub makes my lips super soft, it’s made with real sugar so it’s like a little treat for my lips and it melts into a balm so the sugar just disappears - no need to rinse.”

In a recent sit down with Vogue Paris, supermodel and Victoria’s Secret angel Alessandra Ambrosio said she keeps her daily beauty routine fuss-free: “My daily routine is simple but effective. I cleanse my face, occasionally with an exfoliator, and I love anti-aging serums that are packed full of vitamin C. BB creams with SPF are great too!” the Brazilian beauty revealed.

Get Glowing Skin with These Beauty Buys

A no-nonsense guide to the products your skin actually needs and you may not be using yet.

The best beauty products for beautiful skin

Be it travel, tiredness or simply one too many late nights out, lifestyles show on our skin.

If the closet you have recently got to a glowing complexion came from a highlighting stick, you need to read our essential guide to upping your skincare game, stat.

These skin-changing beauty buys are the not-so-secret-now weapons you need to get ASAP.

Shiseido Retinol Eye Mask at Sephora Dubai available at City Centres

Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask, Sephora Dubai

If you are yet to introduce retinol to your skincare routine, now is the time. This super ingredient comes in a variety of formulas and strengths (including prescription grades), but we recommend starting off slow and mild to see how your skin responds, as while incredibly effective, your skin might react at first and you need time to adjust to the powerful effects of this Vitamin-A derivative.

Best used over night, retinol products are predominantly anti-ageing, but also offer a range of other skincare benefits, such as increasing cell turnover (to help discolouration and brighten) and unclog pores to combat acne.

The market now offers tons of different formulas to pick from, such as Shiseido’s Pure Retinol Smoothing Eye Mask, which can be applied and removed in just 15 minutes - the perfect treat to pep up post-party eyes.

La Roche Posay Hydraphase Moisturiser at Boots Pharmacy available at City Centres

La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Light, 24H Rehydrating Fill-In Care, Boots Pharmacy at City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, City Centre Sharjah, City Centre Fujairah, City Centre Me'aisem, City Centre Bahrain and City Centre Muscat

Hyaluronic Acid is a star ingredient found in many moisturisers. Think of it this way, it is to skin what an Oscar is to an actress - a brilliant bonus.

Offering long-lasting hydration, the La Roche Posay Hydraphase products are offered in both a light and rich formula to suit either dry or combination skin types. The refreshing creams infuse and lock in water to ensure your skin retains moisture for longer.

Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask at Sephora Dubai available at City Centres

Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask, Sephora Dubai

Swap out rough grainy facial scrubs (which could actually be tearing the sensitive epidermis layer of your skin and spreading bacteria on the acne-prone) for an all-together gentler yet highly effective acid exfoliant, otherwise known as AHAs.

To be used twice weekly, the Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask is an exfoliating treatment infused with pumpkin enzyme and alpha hydroxyl acid to remove dead skin and reveal smoother, more radiant pores in a flash.

Always apply sunscreen to protect your complexion during the day as retinols and acid toners can leave skin more susceptible to sun damage from UV rays.

How To: Detox Your Wardrobe

Keep, store or sell? Make room for the new with our essential guide to clearing out your closet

How to Detox Your Wardrobe

Your alarm rings, perhaps you hit snooze, then it’s onto shower, breakfast and finally the all too often challenge of what to wear – a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing that seems just right.

Despite a seemingly full array of clothes in front of you, we all have those dreaded days when it feels as though we have nothing to actually put on – and usually when we’re running late.

The remedy? A major closet clear out!

Here, we uncover the easiest ways to part with the old and show you exactly what to invest in to ensure no more closet overload ever again.

Keep

In our eyes, if you love it, hold onto it tight. Whatever your personal style, if you re-wear an item at least once a month, be sure to keep it at easy access within the front of your wardrobe.

Your favourite denim, smart blazers, well-fitted smart/casual dresses plus an array of blouses and tops make for a well-curated collection to begin with – you can always update with different accessories.

Keep clothes colour-coordinated and divided into sections that best suit your lifestyle. For example office wear, party dresses, weekend comfies, etc…this will make daily outfit planning a whole lot more simple.

Store

Just because the sun is shining, and you can’t bear the thought of leather and velvet, doesn’t mean you won’t want to wear it once the weather cools.

Bulk buy a selection of clear plastic boxes to store above your closet or under your bed. Neatly fold anything you haven’t worn in at least six months – be it biker boots, knits or sparkly festive frocks - you can pull it out again as the seasons switch.

Chances are you’ll reach for these items during Autumn/Winter, but for now, they’re better left in storage to free up rail space in your wardrobe.

Sell

If you haven’t worn it in over a year it’s time to chuck it in. Whether it’s a way-too-tight leopard print mini skirt or a slightly-too-cowgirl fringed jacket, there’s usually a reason why you haven’t worn it out the house.

Purge your closet on unwanted items and pass onto friends, or better yet donate to a charity of your choice.

The Love-forever Pieces

These classic sartorial staples will have a year-round place in your closet.

The Insider Tips to Buying Better

First up, lend a few hours to thoroughly clearing out your closet and getting rid of anything you don’t wear or love anymore – and be brutal. Trust us, it will be a morning or afternoon well spent, and even save you outfit-planning time - as well as freeing up precious space for new purchases.

Are you heading to the mall? Before of the trip, go through your wardrobe and make a mental note of what items you wear the most. Be it a black A-line skirt or a floral maxi dress, look for pieces that you know you’ll get maximum wear out of.

Make a list and stick to it. Whether you need a classic camisole top to team with everything from off-duty denim to office blazers, or a floral summer frock to wear to the beach and beyond, go with the item in mind and you might just find what you’re looking for.

You don’t necessarily need to buy there and then on a whim. Many shops will hold the item in your name for up to several days. That way you go back, revisit the piece and purchase with clear conscious knowing it’s meant to be.

The Best Time to See The Best of Dubai

Dubai is a nation obsessed with shopping. This obsession peaks every year between December to February during the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), one of the biggest shopping and entertainment extravaganzas on the planet.

It's a time when the city goes all out to showcase its best - this desire is especially evident at the shopping malls in Dubai. Mix buzzing hordes with retail therapy, juicy promotions, crazy competitions, weird spectacles, excellent entertainment, dazzling performances, and non-stop fun, and you have a shopping carnival worthy of the Guinness Book of Records.

City Centre Deira has been DSF's partner since its debut and has featured unbeatable shopping deals and unmatched entertainment at every edition. Here's a quick rundown of our past events during the 2016 edition:

The Golden Cirque
From January 7th to 17th, we hosted The Golden Cirque acrobats who thrilled the crowd with mind-twisting feats of athleticism, magic and daring stunts.

The Colourful Mood
From January 18th – January 24th, City Centre Deira presented the ‘Colourful Mood' stage show, a quirky and magical experience of colour and artistry.

The Wonder Talents
The following week, child performers took the stage for a vibrant acrobatic show. Young gymnasts from the Kids Wonder Talent Show flipped, leaped, and twirled their way into audiences’ hearts with their jaw-dropping routines and colourful costumes.

The Imaginary World
‘The Imaginary World’ stage show at the mall’s Central Galleria featured an ensemble of skilled young performers, who transported audiences on a journey of fantasy and make-believe.

The Gold Rush
As well as a lively line-up of stage and roaming entertainment, City Centre Deira also gave away four kilos of gold at one kilo per week. There were opportunities to win the gold planted throughout the Festival, with shoppers being encouraged to search for gold coins with a metal detector.

The 2017 edition is set to be the biggest in the Festival’s history, with a line-up of experiences including citywide events, international shows, mega attractions, numerous shopping opportunities and chances to win for residents and visitors. City Centre Deira is embracing this year’s theme ‘Dubai at its Best,’ with non-stop fun from January 3rd to February 3rd. Slated events include ‘Drop In and Triple Your Win’, a promotion that gives shoppers the chance to spend AED 300 and win thrice that amount – every hour, every day.

The mall is also showcasing a variety of international entertainment, including the famous Lebanese theatre group, the Louna Show, for two exciting performances and a meet-and-greet with fans.

The high-voltage schedule will kick off with ‘Louna in The World of Seasons’ from January 21 – 26, ‘Louna and The Busy Bee Show’ from January 27 – February 1, and a meet-and-greet accompanied by a roaming band on February 2 – 3. Kids in the community can also participate in ‘Art Attack’ art workshops daily from noon to 9 pm on January 17 – 20 and February 2 – 3, and noon to 5 pm on January 21 – February 1.

So, ditch that New Year Party and pack your bags. Come on over to the Dubai Shopping Festival, and discover all that is possible.

The skin care routine for you

Wonder why your skin lacks that healthy glow? Does your skin look dull or breakout easily? May be it’s time you adopt a skin care routine that works for you.

Here are some simple steps to take care of your skin the smart way. Follow this routine and soon you will have youthful, glowing skin.

Beauty from inside out

Beauty starts from within; so make sure you are drinking enough water every day. Include a variety of fresh fruits and veggies to your daily diet and you are bound to notice an improved skin tone.

What’s your skin type?

It is important to identify your skin type. There are 5 basic types - oily, dry, combination, normal and sensitive. Once you understand your skin type, you will be able to pick the products that suit your skin best.

Step 1: Cleansing

A great skin care routine always begins with cleansing. Clean your skin at least twice a day to keep it fresh and free of dirt. You can find cleansers for all skin types at Sephora Dubai, City Centre Deira. Apart from having an in-house range of specially formulated products, Sephora also houses other skin care brands. Their choice of products is specially put together, keeping in mind the needs of each skin type. Apart from skincare, Sephora Dubai also has makeup products and fragrances from various brands, both classic and emerging.

Step 2: Toning

Toning is needed to restore your skin’s natural pH levels. This step also makes your skin resistant against infections. Simply dab the toner all over your face using a cotton pad. Leave it on and continue following this regime regularly for good results.

Clarins Toning Lotion with Iris is a gentle and refreshing toner and works really well on acne-prone skin. You can pick it up from Boots Dubai on the ground floor of City Centre Deira. Go for M.A.C. Charged Water/ Revitalizing Energy if you have dry skin. This toner leaves your skin feeling fresh and is available at M.A.C Dubai at City Centre Deira.

Step 3: Moisturizing

Moisturizing comes next. It works best if you apply the moisturizer up and across your forehead, from your nose across your cheeks and along your jaw and chin. A moisturizer also works as a good base before you apply your makeup.

Bath and Body Works has a great range of products for skin hydration and vitality. For those of you who are concerned about visibly ageing skin, their Intensive Night Reversal & Repair Cream could work wonders. Bath and Body Works is located on Level 1 of City Centre Deira.

You can find products that suit your skin at Flormar, Glam Gals and Lush as well.

It is very important for you to regularly follow your skin care routine. Once your skin adjusts to the new products, you are sure to get that healthy glow you have always wanted.
